The graph shows the size of ozone layer hole in Antarctic and the production of three kinds of ozone-damaging gases from 1980 to 2000.
The two line graphs show how the area of ozone hole changed in Antarctic and how emissions of three distinct poisonous altered over two decades from 1980 to 2000.
As reflected in the first chart, it is evident that the hole’s size was generally expanding, namely initiating from about 400 thousand square km and gradually increasing until the fivefold number in 1990 before witnessing a slight decline to 1500 thousand in 1995, finally reaching 4000 thousand square km in the end of the period.
Regarding to three poisonous substances damaging the ozone layer, there was a slowly rising trend in CFC-12, which can be obviously seen by the smoothly upward line from 30 million tonnes in 1990 to 60 million tonnes in the last. Also noteworthy is that since 1990, N2O has suddenly appeared and it was released at an rapid rate, overtaking CFC-11 in 1994 and reaching 40 million tonnes in 2000.
By contrast, CFC-11 occupied the largest amount of emissions in 1980, it roughly doubled the discharge of CFC-12 in this year (70 million tonnes) and continue to a relatively stable drift with the unchanged number in the next 5 years; after that, this gas decreased dramatically to 10 millions, went below CFC-12 and N2O and became the lowest quantity, and in 2000, only a margin of it was released.
Overall, the ozone hole was enlarged time by time due to the more and more CFC-12 and N2O being found over the decades, meanwhile less CFC-11 was contributed to this process.
