Overall, the number of UK commuters traveling by car and train has increased since the start of the period, with expectations for even more reliance on these transportations. In contrast, the bus has decreased moderately in popularity over the period with predictions for a similar trend in the future
With regard to car, this has been the most popular transportation in the UK since 1970, which was used by around 5 million commuters in the beginning. This number remained unchanged until 1980, then steadily increased with projections of a surge to its peak at 9 millions in 2030. A similar trend was also witnessed in the number of car-travelers, nonetheless, it began the period with only half of the figure for the train with 2 millions.
In terms of bus, this is the only transportation that has shown considerable declines in its usages throughout the examined period. Although bus was the second most popular vehicle of UK commuters in 1970 with approximately 4 million commuters, this figure has dropped steadily and is forecasted to reach its lowest point in 2030
