The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework and households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
The line charts indicate the proportion of families using different electrical devices and how many hours a household did housework per week from 1920 and 2019.
It is clear that families have used modern devices more frequently through the years. Additionally, people spent less time doing housework during the research period.
Looking at the first line chart, in 1920 households in this nation did not use the refrigerator, while the percentage of families using washing machine was highest, at exactly 40%. At the same time, families cleaning their houses with vacuum cleaners accounted for 30%. Ninety years later, all families (100%) in the country used vacuum cleaners and refrigerators. By contrast, the figure for those owning washing machine rose slightly to approximately 75%, despite a slight decrease in between.
Starting with 50 hours per week, households spent around 35 hours doing housework per week in 1940 before falling dramatically to 20 hours. In addition, in 2019 the amount of time which every family cooked, cleaned, and washed dropped significantly to 10 hours a week.
