A bar chart shows the percentage of men and women in Great Britain who had driving licenses and another bar chart shows the percentage of men and women who applied for driving licenses at the age of 17-20.
The graphs illustrate the proportion of car driving license holders and of young drivers in Great Britain categorised by gender in 1996 and 2006.
Overall, it is clear that there were upward trends in the percentage of both male and female drivers with driving license over the given time. In stark contrast, concerning proportion of young drivers aged 17-20, the graph shows opposing trend, with numbers decreasing over the period 1996-2006.
In particular, the ratio of male driving license holders was stable at 70% from 1976-1981, then increasing relatively gradually to 18% in 1996, before growing slightly and steadily, approaching the peak at 80% in 2006. Meanwhile, the rise for female counterparts was from 30% to the highest point at 60% over the same period. Therefore, although males constantly constituted the higher numbers than females did, the latter group experienced the more remarkable change. Besides, the gap between 2 groups was closed over the period.
Regarding the percentage of drivers aged 17-20, both male and female group underwent downward trend, from 50%-45% for the former and from 30%-20% for the latter. Thus, the change in male group was less considerable than that in female counterpart.
