Chevalier
None of the memoirs can be precise and accurate, but Chevalier's memoirs can be considered to be pretty accurate overall. There is reliable evidence available for the three incidents mentioned in the text about the memoir, which contradict the claims made in the passage.
It is mentioned that Chevalier led a wealthy life in Switzerland, often partying and gambling. To acquire such money, he had to sell his properties and convert his assets to cash, and this could take days at times. During this intermediary time, if he ran out of existing cash, he would borrow money from the merchant. This isn't the definition of poor.
The accuracy of the account of conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire is questioned in the passage. Chevalier was known to have written down everything he could each night after conversing with Voltaire. He had kept his notes safely for many years to refer to them later on. There were witnesses who confirmed this fact that he would frequently seek help from his notes while writing the memoir.
Chevalier's account of breaking out from prison by making a hole in the ceiling of his cell using a piece of metal isn't a distorted story to make the memoirs a fun read. There were other prisoners having far more political connections than him who could've bribed their way to freedom but were unable to. Venetian government records have evidence that soon after his escape, the ceiling was repaired, thus confirming the account.
