The charts depict the percentage of households equipped with electrical devices and how much time was spent on doing house chores in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the trend regarding the ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners was an increase as opposed to a fluctuation seen in washing machines for that matter. In addition, the amount of time allocated for housework reduced significantly through the period.
As per the chart, from 1920 to 1960, there was a prominent rise in the rate of refrigerator installation rocketing from 0% to 90%. During the same time period, that of vacuum cleaner doubled and that of washing machine crossed 70% mark. In the next 20 years, the rate of households installing refrigerators increased by 10%, whereas the figure for washing machines decreased by the same amount. The percentage of refrigerator and washing machine reached a plateau in 1980 and 2000, respectively. However, that of washing machines recover and continue to have a gradual rise up to 70% in 2019.
Regarding the number of hours of housework, from 1920 to 1960, halved and slowed down before stabilizing between the period of 1980 and 2000. From that point onward, it decreased slightly towards 2019.
