The given bar charts demonstrate the ratio between men and women who ranked at top marks in 1960 and 2000.
Overall, it can be seen that scientific subjects were the strengths of male students, whereas female learners had a tendency to better at art-related majors. Furthermore, humanities gained more attention from both genders over examined years.
In 1960, about 30% of the total Science registers were males, which was threefold that of female learners. As for Mathematics, the gap between the two sexes was bigger, in which the proportion of female group only accounted for one-sixth in comparison with the opposite gender. Over a 4-decade period, the trend remained unchanged except for the changes in percentage regarding each gender. The year 2000 witnessed significant decreases in the proportion of male students who enroll in Science and Math classes to 20% and 18%, respectively. In contrast, modest increases were seen in the figure of the female group, to 11% and 5%, respectively.
Furthermore, the proportions of men taking part in Art and Languages classes were 10% and 20%, respectively. These figures were remarkably lower than that of women, at 30& and 45%, respectively. 40 years later, while the percentage of male participants in the two subjects mentioned above rose slightly, the opposite was true for females. Additionally, humanities attracted more women than men in 1960, at 22% for the former and 32% for the latter. The trend was reversed at the beginning of the 21st century with 42% was males as opposed to 23% for females.
