compare the ideas of author and lecturer
The article and the lecture both deal with the painting of James McNeill Whistler. Whilst the author believed that the painting of white woman was Whistler’s work, the lecturer had different opinion about it. He thinks that the painting was not the original work of Whistler, but was painted by some other painters.
First, the author claims that after 3 years of death of Whistler, his friends organized an exhibition of his works and the painting of a women in white dress was also exhibited there. In contrast, the lecturer argues that the painting was not done by Whistler. He adds that there were no evidences to prove the author’s argument.
Second, the author asserts that the women in the white dress closely resembled the woman in the painting ‘the symphony of white’. He mentions that the style of painting i.e. the use of monochromatic palate also closely resemble the style used by Whistler. Again, the lecturer refutes the claim of author. He holds that the particular character was a famous subject in that time. Furthermore, although the style of art resembled to that of Whistler’s, there is no enough evidence and since that style of art was popular, other artists might have done the painting.
Another reason why author feels that the painting was done by Whistler, despite the lack of signature, is the presence of small butterfly in the painting. He mentions that the presence of small butterfly at the lower right side of painting was the evidence since all the paintings of Whistler had small butterfly. The lecturer, however, finds this claim dubious. He says that all the paintings of Whistler had butterfly on the upper side. In addition to being in wrong side, the butterfly was of different shape and color. There are also evidences suggesting that it was added much later after the painting was made.
To sum up, both the author and lecturer hold different views about the painting and hence, it is clear to say that they will have trouble finding the common ground on this issue.
