Both the reading and the lecture talk about smart cars. The former provides three reasons that these smart cars will make driving safer, quicker and less expensive. The professor, on the other hand, casts doubt on these ideas one by one by saying that these vehicles will not have clear benefits because of the following reasons.
First of all, both the author and the lecturer posit whether smart vehicles will prohibit accidents or not. The reading suggests that it will save lives by decreasing many accidents due to their automatic programs and a wide variety of sensors despite human poor job when it comes to avoiding road accidents. The speaker, in contrast, rebuts the idea by pointing out that even most technological vehicles fail sometimes. Accordingly, when these failures occur, they can be piled up resulting in a worse situation than today’s circumstances. As a result, it will not reduce injuries and save lives as stated in the passage.
Second of all, both the writer and the professor put forward both the increase in highway speed and decrease in commuting time. The article claims that because of the computer handled cars, they can have high speeds in highways giving rise to lessening commute time for those who come and go with their own cars. The lecturer, however, refutes this by mentioning that these cars allow more people decide to drive themselves. Hence, smart vehicles will not diminish commuting time since they will not take advantage of high speeds provided by those cars.
Finally, both the text and the speaker put forth whether they will reduce the costs of driving or not. The text avers that smart ones will lower the costs by taking direct routes handled by their programs and also expensive items will last much longer time. The speaker, conversely, rejects the idea by explaining that these high tech devices will be expensive. According to her, they will use other technology capabilities such as sensors to help these cars how far they should stay. Additionally, repair costs will be more expensive too and will not be compensated.
