The reading passage makes the point that comparing to establish colonies of humans to live and work on Moon or other neighboring planet, sending people to an asteroid would be the best option. The professor, in contrast, holds a different view by stating that what the reading talks about are not practical.
First, even the reading passage suggests that low gravity on the asteroid would facilitate people to land, bring more equipment and take off, the professor argues in the lecture that low gravity would cause several health problems. For example, people would lose their muscle and their bone density would decrease as well. So, people would struggled from serious health problems if they live on an asteroid for quite a long time.
Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that people could mine valuable metals, which are profitable on asteroids, the professor contends that this is not the whole picture. People should also consider the cost for establishing colonies and transporting those valuable metals, which would probably be higher than value of the metals themselves. And the price of the metals should be considered as well. Since the amount of the metals would increase because of mining activity, the metals' price would not remain stable.
Finally, contrary to what is mentioned in the reading that asteroids are easy to reach because they get close to Earth periodically, the professor suggests that it would not be easy for people to return. This is because some asteroids get close to Earth one point would not stay near Earth permanently. In this case, getting back to Earth could be really challenge for humans.
