Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the deforestation which is cutting down the trees. The author of the reading states the benefit of deforestation as it has created more farmland and livestock. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions, by this activity, humans have put the ecosystem in danger and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
The author of the reading begins by stating ,population is increasing and clearing forest has created more space for farming which provides enough food for every single citizen. The professor believes, there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends although it provides space to live in,destroying rainforest to satisfy people’s need should not be our concern.Instead, we should adopt alternatives like hydroponics which require no soil to grow crop. He goes on to say that we should avoid the traditional practice of farming.
According to the article, deforestation creates new residential area for people. It says demanding space to live benefit regional economy as it allows investors to buy land ,build homes which eventually let people to live, work and thrive. The speaker on other hand points out that 20% of the world’s oxygen are produce from rainforest. In addition,it is the home for many species of plant, animals and insects. So, making money and economic prosperity for short term should not be our priority.
Also, the reading passage notes that forestry industry is our national economy.Countries like brazil,Thailand etc are highly depend on deforestation as it creates job opportunity for many people. Moreover, the world demand for paper, lumber and furniture can be fulfilled from this. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He says these all are developing countries and employs worker in low wages. Thus, this only benefits the small group organization rather than the employee.
As you can see,the writer and speaker hold very different views on pros of deforestation, the lecturer effectively challenges the claim made in the article.
