According to the reading passage, it is stated that rhinoceroses population are under danger of extinction because of the overhunting of it by poachers, who are attracted to their horns. To tackle this issue, the passage proposes several ideas. However, the lecturer states why the assumptions mentioned in the article were not correct and refutes them by describing three reasons as follows.
Firstly, the reading claims that experts can dehorn Rhinos by the help of medical equipments and drugs to kill off poachers' interest in these animals' horns. The professor casts doubt on this point by saying that Rhinos use their horns to guid and protect their young and territory. She states that even if there is enough time and money available to dehorn Rhinos, implementing it would be neither practical nor good for these animals.
Secondly, the article posits that since the Rhino horn is considered valuable because of its Keratin amount, educating the society about Keratin's insignificant health value, can decrease consumption of it. In contrast, the professor says that some people have strong cultural beliefs about the healing value of horns. Thus, this strategy can be feasible among individuals who do not have strong ideas; but for others who have intense beliefs it would be unlikely to change their minds.
Finally, the reading says that another possibility for preserving Rhino community is legalization of rhino horn sales by government. The professor opposes this point by explaining that if rhino horn sales become legal, most people will consider buying it acceptable and the demand for it will grow dramatically. As the demand rises, the price of antler will increase. Eventually, price escalation instigates poachers to keep killing Rhinos.
