The pie charts illustrate the proportion of children studying musical instruments in 1996 and 2016 while the bar chart demonstrates the percentage of their choice of instruments who were under the age of 18 in the UK region.
In general, it is apparent that there was a significant increase in the percentage of children starting to learn musical instruments over the given period of time. At the same time, the piano and keyboard remained by far the most popular choices among them.
Looking at the pie charts, in 1996, the majority of children in the UK were not interested in playing musical instruments, making up 56%. However, by 2016, the participation had risen substantially, reaching slightly more than three-quarters of the total children.
In terms of their choices, the piano was the most prominent instrument in 1996, with 30% of children choosing to play it, but this was followed by a slight decline to roughly 27% at the end of the timeframe. Violin followed a similar pattern, decreasing from approximately 13% to 10% in the same period. Similar changes were also observed for the acoustic guitar and other instruments, at merely 6% and 3% respectively, with both ending at around 2%. In contrast, the keyboard and electric guitar witnessed a dramatic rise in popularity, with the former growing significantly from roughly 22% to reach parity with the piano’s initial level, while the figure for the electric guitar rocketed to 16%. Meanwhile, there was no change in the proportion of children learning more than 1 instrument, remaining stable at approximately 12%.
