TPO 30- Integrated Task
The reading passage and professor both discuss the authenticity of theories attributed to the existence of "burning mirror". The author contends that the story of the burning mirror is just a myth, stating three conspicuous reasons so as to support. However, the lecturer, having a critical point of view, casts a shadow of doubt on what the author proposes. She states that the statement that burning mirror is a myth is unconvincing and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the author claims that the ancient Greeks did not have advanced technology to make such a device. On the contrary, the professor, not having been convinced, declares that the ancient Greeks did not need to shape a large sheet of copper to build the mirror. She proceeds to state that mathematics showed that if one uses twelve small falt pieces of copper, he/she can build a parabolic shape. Acording to the professor, the ancient Greeks knew math and could assemble small pieces to make the mirror.
Second, the author posits that it would take a long time that the burning mirror set moving wooden ships on fire. The lecturer opposes this point, saying that the Greeks did not need much time to burn the ships. To elucidate more on this issue, she explains that the mentioned exprement in the reading passage assumes that it takes time to set a wooden object on fire. The Roman ships were not only built from wood, but there were other materials which were utilized. To make the ships water proof, a material called pithch, that catches fire quickly, was used in building the ships. When this material were on fire, the fire would spread to other parts of the ships. That makes the burning mirror efficient for burning moving ships.
Finally, the author highlights the fact that the burning mirror was not an improvement on flaming arrows. On the other hand, the professor states that the Roman navy was familiar with flaming arrows. She sheds some light on this premise, stating that they could watch the arrows. But they were not able to see the rays from the mirror, only they saw a mirror and suddenly there were fire on the ships.
