The author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the priority of two hypotheses about sea otter decrement in the western coast of Alaska. While the text lists the factors such as the existence of pollution sources in the coast, the sudden decrease of other small mammals, and the ability of explanation about this uneven pattern of decline in this specific region as the main evidences which give the priority to the pollution surmise, the professor counters these specific points and presents some clues to call into the question for the information in the reading passage.
First of all, the lecturer refutes the reason of existence of pollution resource along the coast, which in the reading part it is nominated as one of the reasons for this phenomenon; since there are oil rigs and other industrial chemical pollution. As the professor states, if this incident is related to the pollution resources, there should be the dead body of the sea otters which washed out to the coast; however, there is no any report of wash out body. Moreover, since there are no any crops of sea otters, it can be the indicator of predation hypothesis accuracy.
Next, the passage mentions to the decrement of the other small sea mammals which concurrent with the sea otter's decline as the reason for which the pollution can be. The lecturer doubts on the accuracy of this surmise. As he asserts whale, which is the basic food resource of the sea otter, is disappeared because of human hunting; it does not have any links with the pollution. In this case, as the sea otter loses their major food resource, it changes its diet and gets used to prey the small mammals. Consequently, the population of the sea mammals declines in this region.
Finally, the professor argues the ability of pollution hypothesis in explanation of the uneven pattern of decrease in the specific region. Meanwhile, the passage notes that since this incident occurs in the specific region, thus the pollution can be considered as the main reason. Based on the professor's evidence this phenomenon happens on the Alaska coast because of it the depth which provides the suitable place for the orcas; in addition, since the prey on the sea otter, it leads to this result. On the other hand, in the other places which are shallow and rocky and are not appropriate for the orcas' massive body, the population of sea otter is persisted.
That how the professor effectively challenges the claim made in the article.
