The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about whether the Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur or not. Considering this, the author offers three arguments to indicate that the Sinosauropteryx was not a feather dinosaur. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the way the reading just discussed. The lecturer demonstrates three reasons to reject the options in the passage.
The first criticism of the passage against which the lecture argues is that the fine lines were formed after the animal's death. As stated by the professor, it is unlikely that the fine lines were formed due to decomposition, since other fossils found in the same site and the same situation did not contain these fine lines. In addition, burying in volcanic ash, helps to preserve animals' structures better.
Moreover, unlike the passage which claims that the fine lines are the remains of frills rather than those of feathers, the lecturer illustrates that feathers contain a chemical substance, which name elude me at the moment, and this substance is not found in the frills. The substance was found in the fossil. So, it is a fallacious conclusion to consider lines as evidence of frills.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the reading which says that feathers are often served as a method to help animals fly or a way to regulate animals' body the tempretaure; however, the lines structures were found on the backbone and the tail of the animal. Therefore, the fine lines could not be feathers. The teacher declares that apart farm regulating animal’s body internal temprature and flying, feathers have other functions. For instance, there some types of birds, which have colorful feathers on their tails in order to attract mates. Given the fact that there were found some colorful things in the fossil of Sinosauropteryx, those animals should utilize their feathers to display.
All in all, the professor maintains that there are strong evidences which suggest that the Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur, the arguments in the reading are not convincing.
