In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal with the science archaeology in Britain. Regarding this topic, the reading passage asserts that the archaeologists have serious troubles with researching old cultural artifacts. From the lecturer’s view, however, the concept of the author is unconvincing because the new rules and guidelines improved these troubles in three areas mentioned in the passage.
First of all, according to the lecture, it is not unreliable that several construction projects destroy valuable archaeological artifacts, this is because the new rules that any construction company is able to start their works after taking an examination by archaeological experts. The examination will figure out whether the construction site has valuable meanings in archaeology or not, then if it has, the company should make a plan to preserve artifacts. This contradicts the author’s view point that the artifacts in construction sites might destroyed when workers of construction companies processed their projects.
Secondly, the financial problem of archaeologists was improved because the archaeologists in Britain got new financial supports by construction companies. To be specific, the examination of a construction site by archaeological experts allows the experts to get money from the construction company. Also, construction companies’ supports have a vital role in expanding areas where the experts can research. This counters the author’s argument that the financial support for archaeological experts is unfair and there are some interesting projects without any financial support.
Lastly, the author points out that the difficulty of having a career in archaeology is the lack of available positions for people in archaeology. However, the lecturer rebuts this point of view because several paid jobs that are available to archaeologists were created after the new policies were implemented. For instance, the test of construction site is included several diversified stages which provide archaeologists with many opportunities to get a job. Further, it cause to the increasing of people in archaeology and the number of archaeologists is the largest than ever before.
