The passage and the lecture both discuss the ways to prevents birds hitting the glass windows and offer two opposing views on it. The author in the passage states that there some solutions for this problem and suggests three of them. However, the professor in the lecture challenges the suggestions stated by the author and refutes all of the solutions by proving them scientifically wrong.
First of all, the author highlights that it is possible to avoid birds trying to fly through the window by using one-way glass. Not having been convinced, the speaker asserts that one-way glass will act like a mirror. He proceeds to say that birds do not understand mirrors and they think of the reflections of these glasses as the real sky. Therefore, they will try to fly through them.
Moreover, the reading contends that by using colorful patterns on the windows can stop birds flying through the window. On the contrary, the professor declares that birds see these designs as holes and consequently, they will try to fly through them, unless the holes are designed very small. He continues to say that these small patterns can block the view of the people who live inside the building. As a result, this suggestion does not work out.
Finally, the lecture does not approve the third solution provided by the reading passage which is emitting electromagnetic signals to keep birds away from the construction. The professor propounds that birds use Earth's magnetic field only when they travel over long distances. For example they use it navigate while they immigrate from cold areas to warmer places. He delineates that birds use eyes and brightness of light for short distance flights. Thus, using electromagnetic equipment will be in vain and practically, useless.
