It is difficult to maintain a permanent human presence on Venus due to its extreme and inhospitable conditions. Scientists are discussing some challenges in the reading which makes presence impossible on the Venus. Whereas lecture states that human presence may not be without challenges but it is possible to maintain permanent presence and he provides possible proposals to solve specific challenges mentioned in the reading.
Firstly, reading states that atmospheric pressure on Venus's surface is very high, 90 times more than Earth's which has crushed a spacecraft within the hour of landing. While, lecture provides possible solution to deal with this challenge. He suggests to make station like a balloon which can floats 15 Km above the Venus's surface. Pressure would be lower and normal at 15 Km above surface because pressures is low at higher altitudes.
Secondly, reading shows that there are no water reservoirs on the Venus and atmosphere contains carbon dioxide, nitrogen and Sulfuric acid and it is not possible to carry water and oxygen to Venus. Whereas, lecture states that carbon dioxide and sulfuric acids can be converted into water and oxygen with the help of chemical processes. Therefore, no need to import water and oxygen from Earth to Venus.
Thirdly, reading states that there is very less sunlight on the surface on the Venus, 60% of the sunlight has been reflected back into the space from the thick clouds and surface receives only 40% of the light. This leads to impossibility to achieve solar power to generate electricity. While, lecture agrees about the thick clouds on Venus but gives a proposal to utilize reflected light in the stations. He states that some technique can be used to get the reflected light back.
