The SEA OTTERS
The lecture completely refutes the passage. It is said in the lecture that predators are the cause of the decreased number of the otter population. The passage points out that, pollution is main factor that changed the population of otters adversely. However, the speaker says that researches have shown that the predatory hypothesis is true. If the pollution was the cause, then infection would kill all the otters, but otter population just decreased, which means a predator ate some of the otters.
Contrary to the belief in the passage that, pollution is the main reason to the decreased number of sea mammals such as otters and seals. It is said in the lecture, that humans caused disappearance of whales. Because the orcas can not find whales to eat, they possibly started to eat the small mammals like otters and seals.
Lastly, the passage says that in some areas the otter population remained stable which is explained by ocean currents or other factors. However, the lecture says that the orcas can easily hunt on the coastal side, but they can not go to rocky places where other otters live. So it cause a fluctuation in the decrease of otter population.
