The lecture claims that shorter workweek could have a negative impact on both company and individuals. This does agree with that of the passage, which suggests that 4-day workweek could benefit.
To begin with, according to the lecture, company will spend more money when they give the option of shorter workweek to the employees as the result of hiring new employees, which means the cost on training and medical care, as well as the office occupation of the staff will increase. Instead of recruiting new staff, company would choose the option that asking their original workers to work overtime a day to make up the fifth workday or requiring the staff to work as well as 5 workdays when they have one less day. On the contrary, the passage argues that 4-day workweek will promote the profits because of employees feel more comfortable and make fewer error. Moreover, it won’t cost more money because the company could hire new employees with the wages that are eighty percent of the normal rates, resulting in fewer overworked and error-prone employees that can boost the profit. Since more employees are hired, the unemployment rates will be decreased.
The second point of difference between the lecture and the passage concerns the life quality of the individual employee. The lecture asserts that the quality of individual employee will go down in terms of their job satisfaction. Employee choosing a shorter workweek would like to be the first consideration to get fired. In addition, they usually not the ones who are considered to fit management roles because a management place requires longer workdays to deal with the administrative tasks. However, the passage contends that individual employee’s life quality will increase as the result of enjoying their extra time.
