TPO 49 - Integrated writing
According to the reading, humpback whales migrate long distances with the help of stars like human sailors navigate their direction with stars, and provide some reasons to support the idea. However, the professor considers all of the claims presented in the reading unconvincing, and refutes all of them.
First, the passage claims that the brain of humpback whales have a complex structure that allows them to be so intelligent to use stars orientation to travel long distances. In contrast to this, the speaker indicates that intelligence is not related to the process of using stars for navigation because other animals are capable of using this method while they have an average intelligence like ducks.
Second, the writing writes that the fact that humpback whales travel in straight lines without using external objects, forces, or landmarks makes them dependent on using stars to direct their path. In contrary to this point, the lecturer points that it's possible to not to use landmark for guidance and stil be able to move with the means of earth magnatic field. humpback whales have a magnatic material in their mind that allows them to feel earth's magnatic field, and use it for finding direction.
Third, the article declares that sometimes humpback whales bring their head out of water surface and look upward in order to analyze stars which is called spy-hopping. The professor, however, asserts that spy-hopping can't exclusively be used for looking at stars because we can find examples of other animals that do it while they don't migrate. besides that, sometimes humpback whales do spy-hopping in day light which there are not any sign of stars in sky.
