The charts below show the levels of participation in education and science in developing and industrialised countries in 1980 and 1990.

The charts below compare developing and industrialised countries in terms of the average years of schooling, the numbers of scientists and technicians and the money spent on research and development in 1980 and 1990.

Overall, the figures of industrialised countries are much higher than those of developing nations. There are increases in participations in education and science in both kinds of countries, except in the money aspect.

In 1980, the people in developing nations spent around 3 years in school while that of industrialised countries was around 9 years. These figures, in 1990, rose to under 4 years and to nearly 11 years, respectively.

From 1980 to 1990, the proportion of science workers in industrialised countries saw a significant increase, from above 40 to around 70 per 1000 people compared to just a slight rise from 10 to under 20 people in developing countries. Likewise, the money invested in research and development of industrialised countries increased more than two-fold (from above $150 million to about $350 billion). In contrast, the figure in developing countries fell from about $50 billion to just around $20 billion.
