The lecture and reading both discusses about the use of electronic data in medical system. The Lecturer explains disadvantages of using electronic record system. However, the passage provides benefits of keeping electronic medical record system.
First of all, the article suggests that using electronic medical record system will significantly reduce the storage cost due to discontinuation of paper records. This point has been refuted by the speaker. She believes that doctors do not throw the hand-written medical records. They require documents with original signature. These records are usually stored as back up in case of emergency. Thus, they still need to pay the storage cost. So claim of reducing costs of storage is false.
Second, the use of electronic records will reduce the medical errors caused due to poor hand writing, incorrect transcription and disorganization of paper records. On the other hand, the speaker wants to claim that most doctors use paper, to initially document the patients history and provide prescriptions. Furthermore, the medical staff is responsible for uploading the electronic data. So, there are high chances of misinterpretation of certain information by staff members. Thus human errors are not unavoidable.
Finally, the writer mentions that electronification of medical records will aid in medical research. Additionally, it will be easier for data gathering and easy accessibility of the records will be an added advantage. On the contrary, the orator believes that there are very strict privacy laws regarding the access of patients records. The researchers will have to follow very lengthy procedure for getting hold of records. Moreover, patients may block the use of their medical records for the purposes other than their treatment. Therefore, the use of electronic medical record storage would not help in any research projects.
