TPO 15 Integrated Essay
The author believes that uncontrolabale population growth of cane toad, which is a non-native amphibian in Australia, can be solved with several simple approaches. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. She explains why the author is not right about his points, and the methods are not as simple as the author claims.
First, the author states that errection of a fence can avoid cane toads from spreading to other parts of Australia. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that eggs and young cane toads may be transfered through streams of water, which cannot be stopped by a fence. Therefore, building a fence would be useless.
Second, the author suggests that a campaign in which volunteers participate in destroying of cane toads can be helpful as well. In contrast, the lecturer explains that untrained volunteers may have difficulty detecting cane toads, and eventually they may end up destroying other native amphibian species, specially the ones whose population is endangered.
Finally, the author believes that a virus which is developed in laboratories can hinder cane toads' reproduction and maturing. On the contrary, the lecturer believes that such virus may also be trasported to the native habitat of cane toads by researchers or pet collectors, and endanger their population. Thus, this would not be a propper method as well.
