Both the reading and lecture are about the old fossil structures which have been discovered inside an old fossil tree- its date returns 200 million years ago. The reading provides three reasons that these structures do not belong to dib bees and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of arguments dubious.

First of all, the author of reading declares that researchers could not find any bee fossil related to 200 million years ago- the oldest fossil is associated with 100 million years ago. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She points out that there is a convincing possible for lack of fossil bees in 200 million years ago. The professor elaborates on this by mentioning that in the mentioned time, there were a few trees which could produce resin. One should notice that this substance is responsible for maintaining fossil bees and since the trees had not evolved for producing resin; hence, any fossil could not remain.
Secondly, the article contends that there were not flowering plants in aforementioned time; subsequently, the bees could not have feed on flowers- it should mention that the first flowering plant was appeared in 125 million years ago; in the contrast, the professor claims that bees could feed on nonflowering plants like fern and pine tree and then after evolving flowering plants, they adapted to new condition and change their diet.

Finally, the reading passage states that the discovered structures are not similar to modern nests and they have some differences in details. For instance old structures do not include any caps in chambers and the structures may have created by other insects instead of bees. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer and she expresses that now there is decisive chemical evidence which supports the role of bees in these structures. When researchers analyzed the old structures and they could find a similar chemical watertight substance which is used by modern bees.
