Both the reading and lecture discuss about Ethanol fuel as an alternative for gasoline. While the author believes that Ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline, the professor is disagree with the idea and refutes every reason that has been given in the reading passage.
First, the reading states that Ethanol won't solve the problem of global warming cause it releases carbon dioxide as well as gasoline. However, the lecture opposes that by saying although Ethanol releases co2, but this Ethanol will be produced from plants such as corn. So the co2 emitted by using Ethanol as a fuel will be removed during the process of growing a plant.
Second, the author argues that using Ethanol will reduce the amount of plants available for other uses, including animal food. The professor contradicts that by saying that Ethanol can be produced using celluloz that can be derived out of the parts of a plant that are not eaten by animals.
Third, the reading passage discusses that Ethanol can’t compete with gasoline in terms of price. The lecture finds this reason unconvincing and states that Ethanol can compete with gasoline in price terms in future. the professor continues his argument by illustrating an economic rule which is: the increase in production will reduce the cost and if the production of Ethanol increases in future, the price will drop without the help of the government. He also states if the production of Ethanol multiplyes three times, the price will drop by forty percent.
