The table shows the amount of coal used by different sectors in the UK.
The given table illustrates how many million tons of coal used by five major energy consumers in the UK over a period between 1975 and 2000.
Overall, what stands out from the table is that there were considerable downward trends in coal consumption in total and by the major sectors in UK’s economy. Over the period, Power stations remained as a leader in coal consumption, on the other hand, Services represented as the least consumer.
According to the 1975 year, the coal consumption in the UK’s economy was the record over the period at 121.2 million tons. When looking at the details, the quality of coal in electricity production was the biggest figure at 77.2 million tons among the considered sectors, almost 60 percent of the total, nearly four times more than the second place as Domestic and nearly 20 times more the last place as Service at 4.2 million tons.
Power stations consumed coal most at 77.2 million tons in 1970 and reached a record in 1980 at 89.6 million tons. After that the coal consumption gradually dropped to 47.1 million tons, however, it remained the biggest coal user in the economy. Similarly, numbers in million tons of coal consumption dramatically went down with almost 8 times less in Domestic, 6 times less in Industry, and 7 times less in Service sectors, at 2.6, 3.2, 0.6 million tons, respectively in 2000.
