The reading and lecture are both about Yellow cedar decline in which the reading provides some hypothesis where as lecture go against these hypothesis. The author of reading believes that there is some reasons why yellow cedar is declining. But lecture cast doubt by saying that there is no adequate information why the number of yellow cedar is declining.
First of all author claims that insects parasites can destroy the Cedar population. He believes that insects like Bettle can damage the outer layer of the tree. This point is hardly challenged by the lecture. The lecture says that Cedar is highly resistant to Bettle than any other species. Healthy cedar does not have any chance of going to be damaged by Beatle.
Secondly, the reading claims that Brown Bear can be other reason of Cedar declining. He says that Bear and its claws ripped off the bark of Cedar which in further vulnerable to damage. But the lecture rebut this argument. The lecture says that if it is possible so where there is no bear why the cedar population is declining there. He provides an example of Island where there is no bear but the population of cedar are decreasing there.
Thirdly the author mention the reason of frost would be possible for the degradation of Cedar. Frost damage the root of Cedar and finally there is a decline in the population. The lecture on the other hand go against it. He says that frost cannot be the reason. Furthermore he points out that Cedar tree in lower altitude are dying than the cedar in higher altitude. Obviously the higher altitude is cold enough than the lower altitude but the cedar tree in warm area are dying than the cold altitude.
