Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by 30 percent. Potential employers, looking at this dramatic rise in grades, believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors.
The author's conclusion to terminate student evaluation of the professor to improve the student’s achievement and get them placed is flawed. Author evidence that professors were assigning higher grades to get better evaluation from the student. Employers thought the rise was inflated and it was the reason behind the students being not successful as Alpha University. A meticulous analysis will show that certain evidence needs to be justified to validity.
First, the author implies the professor is assigning higher scores for getting better evaluation from the students. There might be numerous reasons for getting good grades to the student, which might be that the professor has adopted a new method of teaching that has benefited the students. Or the students might work extra hard to score the grades. Such evidence would weaken the author's argument that professors are giving higher grades to get better evaluations.
Second, authors imply students' higher marks will lead them to get placed. There are various factors for students getting placed such as the skills required for the particular job. It might be the case that the students of Alpha university have more skills and the university provides opportunities for overall development. Also the employer might seek the courses that are taught in the Alpha university and not in the Omega university. Moreover it might be possible that the curriculum of the Omega university is not updated and doesn’t match the current job market.
