The above policy appears sound because it attempts to hold humans responsible for their activities and how it affects other species on the planet. However, the policy is extreme becasue the level of technological progress available can be used to protect species regardless of whether or not extinction is likely because of human activities.
The policy assumes that the process of extinction is natural and should only be averted if it a consequence of human actions. This assumption is flawed because it is not environmentally viable and friendly. Sustainable development is a duty of humans and protecting the environment – and its species- is an integral part of sustainable development. Therefore, protecting endangered species whether or not their likely extinction is a result of human activities should be adopted. For instance, there are animals and plants that may not be useful today but would be useful for future generations. Hence, all species should be protected as realistically possible. In addition, if our forebears didnot have preservation and conservation methods, our current quality of life would be impaired.
Nevertheless, the policy is practical because it recognizes the fact that nature would always take its course. There is a process of natural selection and only the fittest survive. In an instance where natural selection is responsible for the likely extinction of a specie, human intervention may be limited and it may not be feasible to use community resources to save species when the resouces can be used for other things. Species such as Dinosaurs became extinct due to natural selection. Therefore, for the sake of making good use of societal resources, societies should protect species that are fatalities of human activities because otherwise they would not face elimination.
In conclusion, it is the responsibility of humans to protect all species within reasonable limits. However, this policy is sound because it would protect certain species from dangerous human activities.
