A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college

Essay topics:

A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college.

Applying to colleges is a huge step for students and it is weighed heavily on high school GPAs, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and SAT scores. The given prompt suggests that all the students of a particular nation should have to study the same curriculum until they enter college. I personally strongly agree with the given prompt for the following two reasons.

Having the same curriculum up until high school gives all the students a fair chance of being admitted to a particular college. For example, if there is a school that covers all the subjects on a surface level, their students will tend to get higher scores in their classes as compared to students who go to schools that cover subjects meticulously. Thus, the difference in the curriculums of the two schools will be responsible for the divergent high school GPAs of the students. Since college applications weigh school GPAs heavily in the admission process, the chances of the students from the school that does not go in-depth with the subjects will be given higher preference given their higher GPA. Because of this, certain students will be prioritized over others who might have the same or higher level of smartness.

If all the students entering a specific college come in with the same knowledge, it will give the professors of the college a better idea of what the students already know and where the professor needs to start from. If the students coming into college have discrepancies in the material that they have studied in high school, the professors are obliged to go over all the material from the basics so that none of the students feel lost. This is beneficial for the students who have not learned the material in high school, however, for the students that have learned it previously, time that could have been spent learning new things is being wasted on repetition.

Some might argue that repetition does not harm, in fact, it helps the students jog their memories. Although this is true, students that have recently learned the material in college do not require a revision since it is fresh in their memory. Given the reasons above, it would be beneficial for the students and for the professors at colleges if the curriculum was standardized till the students enter college.
