The bar illustrates the proportion of American citizens who lived by themselves in terms of age over the 150-year period from 1850.

In general, the percentage of solo people in the US tended to increase during the given period. Additionally, while the 55-64 bracket was the one having the highest figure, the most significant difference belonged to the 17-26 group.

In 1850, just over 2 % of people who were from 37 to 46 and from 47 to 54 living alone in the USA while the figure for 5564 group was not much higher with about 3%. In the next 50 year, while there was a considerable increase in the percentage of solo citizens who was from 27-36 with over 2%, those of three older age group relatively remained constant.

In 1950, the us witnessed significant rise in the proportion of people who lived alone in all age brackets. At the ending point of the period, the figure for 55-64 group almost doubled that of 50 years ago, which was about 17%. The 47-54 group and the 27-36 group were the second and third leading brackets in terms of the percentage of solo people, with 13% and 8% in turn. The single life started to be popular among those who were from 17-26 and the proportion of them underwent a dramatic rise to 5%, which was lower than that of 37-46 age group at 790
