Overall, the marriage rates went down over the period shown, while the number of divorces fluctuated. The percentage of unmarried and divorced adults saw an increase where the proportion of married and widowed decreased.
The number of marriages hovered between around 2.5 million to about 2 million over the entire period and the figures declined by .5 million in 2000. The divorce rates started about 1 million and increased to just below 1.5 million in 1980 and finally dropped again to 1 million at the end.
The proportion of married and widowed adults experienced a slump with the former decreasing from 70% to just below 60% in 2000, and the later dropped from nearly 10% to slightly above 3%. In contrast, the percentage of never married and divorced people climbed up to nearly 20% and just below 10% respectively.
