The bar chart shows the proportions of English men and women of different ages who were living alone in 2011. The pie chart compares the numbers of bedrooms in these one-person households.
The bar chart illustrates the percentages of English who chose to live alone in 2011 based on their gender while the pie chart gives information about how many bedrooms these people had in their houses.
Overall, at younger ages, males were more likely to live alone, however, the situation reversed regarding older age categories. Consequently, in total, English women made up a higher proportion when compared with their male counterparts. Besides, to single people, the most common choice for accommodation is two-bedroom apartments.
From 16 to 49, larger proportions of single-occupant households were owned by English men with a peak of nearly 65% in the 35-49 age group. However, from 50 to 64, the figure for males was in equilibrium with that of females. In terms of older age categories, a significant proportion of people aged 65 or over who were living alone in England were female. Noticeably, to people whose ages ranged from 85 to above, women accounted for around 76% of those deciding to have one-person families.
In the same year, 35.4% of single-occupant households in England had two bedrooms, while the figures for those having one bedroom and three bedrooms were 28% and 29.8% respectively. In contrast, under 7% of one-person households have four-bedroom or five-bedroom houses.
