The chart below gives information about the most common sports played in New Zealand in 2002.
The chart represents the proportion of New Zealand students played nine distinctive sports by its gender in 2002.
Overall, the participation in sports for both boys and girls is clearly equally distributed, however the sporting preferences between them tend to be different.
Soccer, other and cricket were the most popular sports among New Zealand male students, whose participation rates were close to 25%, about 18% and 10% respectively while female students participated in those sports of 5%, 10% and 1% respectively. In contrast, female played the most of net balls of 25% and swimming of 22% compared to boys played 1% for netball and about 12% for swimming.
The rest of sports such as tennis, basketball, martial arts, athletics have lower level of popularity, with a slightly higher participation rates for boys. The first three sports had recorded of about 8% boys playing rates whereas there was lesser than 5% girls played in those sports. Athletics were the lowest selected for both genders of close to 3%.
