The column chart illustrates differences in the proportion of home ownership and people renting housing in England and Wales from 1981 to 2011.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the proportion of accommodation owned by households, while the opposite was true for that of people renting place of residence over the period shown.
At the beginning of the period, about 75% of inhabitants selected to rent houses. Meanwhile, the percentage of houses owned by families was just one – third of that figure, at 25 per cent. However, the gap between two categories appeared to be narrowed over a period of 53 years. Until 1971, the proportion of households renting and owing accommodation are equally represented at exactly 50%.
Since then, the figure for home ownership experienced a gradual increase, in comparison with a moderate decline in the proportion of residents renting houses from 1981 to 2001. Despite a slight fall of approximately 5% to 62%, the rate of households owned accommodation was still higher than that of occupants renting dwellings, which only made up relatively 35% at the end of the period.
