The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of families owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is evident that the percentage of families owning houses witnessed an upward trend, while the one of families in rented houses dropped. The two segments shared the whole proportion equally in 1971.

At the begging of the given period, around 78% of the households in England and Wales rented their accommodation, while only about 22% had their own houses. Before the year of 1971, despite of the decrease in percentage, most of the English and Welsh families still lived in rented houses.

However, in 1971, both the households owning and renting accommodation accounted for 50%. After that, the proportion of families owning houses kept increasing until 2001, at approximate 69%. At the end of the given period, the families living in owned houses saw a slight decrease to around 64%, and the percentage of the ones renting houses underwent a turnaround to about 36%.
