The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult America in two of the years.
The first bar chart compares the total number of American couples who got married and who chose to divorce over a period of 30 years. The second one shows the percentage of four different marital status in the USA in the years 1970 and 2000.
It is clear that there were much more marriages than divorces over the period shown. Also, the proportion of married adults was the highest in both years.
In 1970, 5 million residents in the US got married, while only 1 million couples ended their marriage. In the following ten years, USA saw an increase in the number of divorces, rising from 1 million to approximately 1.4 million, whereas the figure for marriages kept the same. By 2000, the number of marriages had fallen by 0.5 million, and people saw the number of divorces decline by a similar amount.
Looking at the details in the second illustration, 70% of adults were married in 1970, which was significantly higher than any other three status. Never married, widowed, and divorced status only took roughly 15%, 8%, and 2% respectively. Thirty years later, the percentage of married citizens decreased by around 10 percent. By contrast, the equivalent figure for never married people and divorced persons rose by 5% and 6% respectively. The proportion of the widowed status remained relatively stable.
