Coal consumption by sectors in the UK (in million tonnes)
The table gives information about how much coal was consumed by four different sectors in the UK from 1975 to 2000.
Overall, the period between 1975 and 2000 experienced a decrease in coal consumption of all sectors. In addition, the figure for Power stations was the highest in this period.
The amount of coal used for Power stations in 1975 was 77.2 million tonnes, which accounted for two-thirds of the total coal consumption. This figure increased slightly to 89.6 million tonnes in 1980, but later decline sharply to 47.1 million tonnes in 2000.
It can be seen that Domestic, Industry and Services was 44 million tonnes, which accounted for one-thirds of total use. However, this number fell significantly to 6.6 million tonnes, 8 times as lower than that for Power station in 2000.
