The diagram below shows how the sand dunes are formed.
The diagram illustrates the formation of sand dunes from sand particles. Overall, it can be seen in the three main stages of formation that sand particles are driven by the wind over dry ground to gather on wet ground where sand dunes are created.
In the first diagram, sand particles are blown by wind over dry sandy ground and two areas of wet ground. The second diagram shows that sand particles continue to be carried by wind along the ground, but more sand particles are collected over wet ground and stacked up to form small separate piles.
Sand particles which continue to be transported by wind over wet ground, as illustrated in the last diagram, have been eventually gathering with the increase in size of piles of sand. When the accumulation of many sand particles is large enough, sand dunes are formed. These sand dunes are big enough to deflect the wind direction, forcing it up one side if the dune and down the other side. As this happens, the process is repeated with particles of sand start gathering and piling up on the next area of wet ground
