Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. (High acid levels are measured by low pH values)
Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health.
You should write at least 150 words.
The given line chart gives information about acid levels, which are measured by low pH values, produced by consumption of Sweets food, Which may cause tooth decay.
Overall, it can be seen that there are three sources of sugar that can spoil the teeth, namely, fruit sugar, cane sugar, and honey, for 40 minutes for each one. Therefore, cane sugar brings about the most damage to the teeth, followed by fruit sugar and honey.
The pH level in the mouth at which tooth decay occurs is 5.5 or below. The lower the pH value is, the more acidic the mouth environment becomes, so tooth decay becomes increasingly likely. Cane sugar is the worst offender in this regard, which can decrease the pH level from 7 to 3 in the first five minutes after eating sweets food, and it takes another 25 minutes to return to the healthier levels (ph 5.5 or above).
Another type is fruit sugar, which can cause a decline in the mouth's pH level from 7 to just 4.2 five minutes after the consumption. The pH stays below 5.5 for 20 minutes. Finally, the safest source of these three sweets food is honey because it only lowers the pH value beneath 5.5 in the first five minutes and can go back to the acceptable acidity levels less than 15 minutes after eating.
