Goods transported in UK
As we can see, the line graph illustrates the number of goods transported through four different means in the UK between the years 1974 to 2002, measured in millions.
Overall, the most popular form of transporting goods in the UK was by road, whereas pipeline was the least used method from all. While rail and water were used the same amount in the year 1974; however, this practice was changed during the year 2002 making water more popular than rail.
From the years 1974 to 2002, most of the goods in the UK were transported by road. In 1974, almost 70 million tons of goods were transporting through roads, the roads transportation rate of goods per million tons remained almost stable for the next twelve years until 1982, it steadily rose just above 80 million ton by the year 1994. Before declining 1 million tons in 1998, roads skyrocketed reaching just below 100 million tons making this the highest used form of transportation by the year 2002. Moving towards pipeline, it followed the same order as roads, starting from 2 million tons and ending at the bottom with just above 20 million tons.
The last two categories, water, and rail were transporting an equal amount of goods around 40 million ton in the year 1974. During the following years, water jumped to around 62 million tons, while rail showed a gradual decline over the years but came out to be just above 40 million by the end of the year 2002.
