The diagram compares sources of UK’s air pollution in terms of their mass in million tonnes(MT) over a fifteen years rime span from 1990 to 2005.
Overall, the industry accounts for the main air polluting sector, and the total pollution declined during this interval.
Three sectors are responsible for the air pollution in the UK, namely industry, transport and household. In the beginning, the first place belonged to the industry by almost 6 MT, followed by two others both at 1 MT, totally emitting 8 MT pollutants to the atmosphere. This total quantity reduced gradually to 5 MT by 2005. The industrial emissions reduced to 2 MT by the same year as well.
However, the transport sector fluctuated as per contaminants over the course of these years and overtook the industry sector to 2.5 MT in 2002, reaching to 3 MT annual emissions by 2005. Although this sector represented nearly the same trend as the households sector until 1999, the latter managed to mitigate its emissions to the environment to a negligible amount by 2005.
