The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph illustrates the percentage of the people aged 65 and over in USA, Sweden and Japan over a period of 100 years. It is clearly seen that the proportion of elderly is foreseen to increase and peak in 2040 in every country over the period shown. Furthermore, Japan’s 65-year-old population rate witnesses the most dramatic change.
In 1940, about 9 % of American population were 65 years old and over in comparison with 5% of Japanese people and around 7% of Swedish people. There was a considerable growth to 15% and under in the proportions of elderly citizens in US and Sweden over the next 50 years. On the other hand, the figure for Japan remained below 5% until 2000.
Looking into the future, it is predicted to go up sharply to around 27% in the percentage of aging people in Japan in a period of 10 years from 2030 to 2040. The figures for American and Swedish population aged 65 and over are expected to increase lower than that of Japan, reaching 23% and 25% respectively by 2040.
