The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph compares the percentage of the population who is 65 years old and over from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden, and USA. Overall, it is clear that the percentage of the old generation in the three countries is expected to present an essential increase in the future as a whole and Japan is estimated to be the biggest aging society.
In 1940, USA, with almost 10% old people, had the largest old population, followed by Sweden at about 7%. Japan owned the smallest percentage of senior, at 5%.
Over the period of a century(from 1940 to 2040), the percentage of American old population is predicted to increase, and in 2040 will arrive at around 24% although it remained stable between 1980 and 2017. The similar trend could also be seen in that of old Swedish people, who began to outnumber old Americans in 1995 and whose rate is projected to have greater rise, hitting 25% in 2040.
In Japan, however, the proportion of old citizens remained stable at 5% until 2005 despite some fluctuations, and then is estimated to increase most sharply, overtaking that of American and Swedish seniors in the same year(2030), finally reaching the highest point at almost 27% in 2040.
