The graph below shows relative price changes for fresh fruits and vegetables, sugars and sweets, and carbonated drinks between 1979 and 2009.
The line graph illustrates changes in price of three different food product groups from 1979 to 2009 and and the overall trend in the consumer price index over this 30-year period.
Overall, although prices for the three food product groups showed a fluctuating leapforg, only the increase in the prices for fresh fruits and vegetables was significantly higher than the rise in the general consumer price index.
In 1979, prices have the same starting figure for fresh fruits and vegetables and carbonated drinks. The former then took the lead by increasing constantly and sharly when they reached a peak of 340 in the first half of 2009. However, they lost momentum and decreased merely by 10 in the remainder of 2009. By contrast, prices for carbonated drinks rose steadily during the period of the survey. At the end of the survey, they hold the lowest point among all the factors surveyed (at 152), making them become the least favoured food product group.
The consumer price index and the number for sugar and sweets shared a striking similarity. From the same figure of about 60 at the start of the period, both figures then experienced a slight increase. After many minor fluctuations, the consumer price index finished at 220, which was 20 higher than its counterpart-prices for sugar and sweets.
