Overall, it is clear that the number of the 1st marriages decreased in the 1975-2000 period, while that of the 2nd marriages significantly rose at the same time. Besides, although the total number of marriages in the US experienced an increasing trend, the figure of the divorces steadily grew during the 1975-2000 period.
At the starting point in 1975, America had roughly 340 thousand couples who married for the first time, compare to the second time, at around 150 thousand couples. Although there was a slight growth to 410 thousand in 1985, the figure of the 1st marriages rapidly dropped to 300 thousand in 2000. In contrast, the figure of the 2nd marriages grew to 360 thousand, in spite of an insignificant decreasing in 1995.
From 1975 to 1985, the total number of marriages had a rise from exactly 500 thousand to approximately 640 thousand, likewise, that of the divorces also increased from nearly 80 thousand to precisely 200 thousand. Nevertheless, America witnessed a considerable decrease of the total number of marriages from 640 thousand in 1985 to 580 thousand in 2000, while the number of the divorces increased to 250 thousand in 2000.
