Household car ownership in Britain

Essay topics:

Household car ownership in Britain

The graph illustrates changes in the number of cars per household in Britain over a period of 40 years.

Overall, while the percentages of households with one car and two or more cars increases, the opposite is true for no-car households. Also, the figure for families with no car in Britain experiences the biggest change over the period shown.

In 1990, the proportion of no-car households stood at over 50%, compared with just under 40% of households had one care and about 12% had two or more cars. Over the next 15 years, the percentage of households with one car dropped significantly by 20%, whereas the percentage of families having one car rose rapidly to around 55%. Meanwhile, the figure for households having two or more cars witnessed a fluctuation between 1995 and 2005, at around 10%.

In 2030, the no-car household is expected to lowest, at roughly 15%. In contrast, the proportion of two or more cars is expected to increase considerably over 40% in 2030, which is similar to the estimated figure for one-car households.
