The line graph shows the number of trips to other countries by UK residents for various purposes between 1989 and 2001

The line graph and the table compare how many trips UK residents had to other foreign countries for different purposes during a 10-year period.

It is clear that UK individuals travelled more through the years. Noticeably, the number of trips for holidays was by far the highest during the research period.

In 1989, there were around 30 million trips for vacations while the number of visits for business was the second-highest figure in the chart, at just under 10 million. Meanwhile, the figures for family visits and other purposes were lower, ranging from 5 to 6 million visits.

In 2001, the quantity of visits for recreational purposes dropped dramatically to just under 40 million trips, despite a sharp increase in 1998. At the same time, the year 2001 witnessed slight decreases in the figures for business trips and other purposes to around 8 million and 3 million trips respectively. By contrast, UK residents took more family-related trips, with its figure to approximately 12 million. In addition, although the total of trips for all purposes rose constantly from 1989 to 1998, the number of all trips went down slightly to only 61 million in total in 2001.
